Times are changing. 50 years ago, when someone lost his job, he would sell his house, pack up his family and move to what ever state the jobs were in, sometimes even changing professions.
Even 30 years ago in 1980, when I lived in a suburb of Detroit, or Motown, I remember when the auto industry laid off record numbers of employees. Google said in May of 1980, car manufactures lay offs totaled 284,000 people and at that time Houston, Texas was finding oil. People were moving to Houston by the droves. My dad and uncle were among of them. They used to joke about half of Texas being Michiganders!
Now in this information era when a job is lost due to the economy, layoffs, physical limitations, or retirement, the location of work has changed, but not necessarily the place of residence.
Cyberspace is the new workplace.
During the Great Depression, when the stock market in the United States crashed, thousands of investors lost large sums of money and many were wiped out, lost everything. The ensuing period ranked as the longest and worst period of high unemployment and low business activity in modern times. Banks, stores, and factories were closed and left millions of Americans jobless, homeless, and penniless.
It was not so for everyone. There were some individuals and businesses who made money during the Great Depression. Some made millions, in currencies which were worth even more in that time.
Even though we’re not experiencing the crisis that was experienced during the great depression, many people are feeling the negative effects of the economy, health issues or retirement. Why are some people getting rich while others are not?
The answer is in gaining Knowledge and properly applying it.
Gathering, understanding and applying information no matter what is happening in our external circumstances is the difference between the rich and the poor. Knowing who makes money — and how they do it — could help us prepare to follow suit in the years to come.
Success comes from the proper application of knowledge.

Hi Linda
Another excellent post – you’re on a roll!
You’re absolutely right about success being from the proper application of knowledge, or said another way … learning (ie: genuinely understanding the knowledge learned) then taking the RIGHT action (not just any action will do!).
Your post reminds me of the story of those who made a fortune in the Gold Rush … the ones who sold the equipment ultimately made more than those searching for gold. The business of selling picks and shovels is a great example of a niche market.
So, why are some people getting rich and others aren’t?
I believe that one of the many reasons is that there are those who let their circumstances control them (which we are all guilty of at some point), and feel that there is nothing they can do to change them, therefore they don’t;
then there are those who decide that they CAN do something about their circumstances, they are able to look inside themselves, invest in themselves (personal development etc), and take control of their lives.
Most people are brought up to believe that if they get an education, get a job and work hard, that life will be good. They are taught that this is what you do.
Of course, those of us who have ventured into the world of online business, or even a network marketing business offline, have already come to the realisation that this doesn’t have to be the case anymore.
Whoever wants want it badly enough, will find a way to make it happen, and that includes being open enough to see opportunities when they present themselves.
I agree with you that Jodie and Kimberly are terrific teachers!
The Profit Being You community is a great place to be … we met each other there, remember? I’ve also met many other wonderful people there who I consider to be real friends, not just online acquaintances (including you!).
I can’t wait to see what you’ve got for us next, Linda!

Hey Linda,
I know just what you’re talking about. I lived in Detroit during the first part of the ’80 when it was so bad they were closing down schools so I also moved to Plano, Texas and remember them saying, “The last one in Michigan, turn the lights out.” Now it’s happening again in Michigan.
The internet is certainly the new work place. I love my work place and the people I get to interact with here. Nice meeting you.

Absolutely right. It’s all about educating yourself and applying what you learn. Anytime I talk to folks offline about how I now earn my living online, I like to point out to them that they didn’t always know how to build a house, or manage accounts, or anything else that they do for weekly pay. They tried, they learned, and they got better at it.
Working online is no different. You just have to learn and above all else, be willing to try.

It looks like a lot of us came from Michigan. I left in the early ’70′s.
Through our amazing connections in our work place, the Internet, I’m sure that we are well on our way to achieving the life of our dreams. You are part of that equation for me, Linda!

Hey Linda
Well said. There are so many opportunities for people right now if they think outside the box and the traditional beliefs they were perhaps brought up with.
I have worked closely with Robert Kiyosaki over many years. I remember back in 1992 he said to a group of us he was teaching that the office block we were located in where the course was running (high-rise) would one day be apartments and people would be working from their home. I thought he was stark raving mad!!! – How wrong I was

Linda,
I have often heard that knowledge is power. Holding the right knowledge and learning to use it is creating opportunity where misfortune has fallen. Many of the “jobs” people are doing today to earn an income did not even exist a year or two ago.
It’s sad to see what were once strong local businesses suffer in this economy. However, I’m seeing often times that the ones that are moving forward and growing are the ones that are gaining new knowledge. Learning different ways to do things they used to do. They’re exploring outside the box and winning. The ones that are stuck and declining are the ones that aren’t learning and adapting to the new way of doing business.

You’re right Don, progress is exciting and change, for some, can be painful. Those who embrace the change will benefit.

Well, I have to agree with this article. It is extremely accurate in the general sense. But when it comes to acquiring knowledge and applying it, this is where it gets problematic. Access to common knowledge is easy, but specialized information for success is hard to find.

That is right, knowing what you must and applying the knowledged you have acquired will help you become richer. And sometimes you will need a little luck or what we call God’s blessing and providence. Rubbing elbows with people who know’s a lot will be of great help also.

Thank you lesha~
We need to rub elbows like you said! Often it’s not what you know but who you know! And I feel God’s hand in every part of my life!

I completely agree with lucy, there are loads of people out there with so much knowledge about so many things, that you would expect them to be doing well but they do not apply their knowledge properly or in thr right way or with any guidance. Sometimes you need to be mentored by someone or read up on people who have achieved what you want to achieve.

Knowledge is truly powerful! We need to learn to value and focus on our interests so we can more productive and effective in whatever we want succeed in. I think people become rich because of ambition. They hold on to the hope and possibility of becoming more rich and powerful while the poor simply accept the reality of just being poor. They let the lack of resources get to them.
