Personal Development

Laughter is the best medicine. We’ve heard the expression time and again. For decades, researchers have explored how humor helps patients relieve stress and heal. And laughter really is the best medicine!   Thinking about posting these funny stories makes me feel good!

Funny Teen-age Story
On my first trip to California, I was a young girl of 18 years with long blond hair, a thin waistline and, unfortunately, a lip full of cold sores. As I was strutting down the boardwalk at Venice Beach admiring all of the buff bodies, I self-consciously covered up my mouth. As I paused, looking at the jewelry in a vendor’s case, a muscle-bound young man came up to the counter to help me. “Oh no, I thought putting my hand even more securely in front of my mouth “he’s going to see my lips!” Without looking directly at his face I could see in my peripheral vision that he was one of those huge body-builder types. To my horror, I heard him ask “Are those cold sores on your lips?” “Shoot,” I thought, “He saw!” While avoiding eye contact I heard him say, “Here, try this cream, it will really help!” and I felt him putting the cream on my mouth. As I looked up into his deep blue eyes I saw an attractively contoured face, beautiful golden hair, a silky smooth complexion… and a lip full of cold sores!

Funny MS Story
I have a walker that I can sit on, when I’m too tired to walk. Brady, my teenage son, was pushing me on the walker like a wheel chair only I’m facing backwards, (it looks really silly and is embarrassing.) One time we were at the airport in California, we were running behind to catch our plane.

We caught a moving sidewalk to feel ‘super human’ – dananana…When we stepped onto the moving sidewalk we picked up speed …dananana…. As we know in every airport there are tons of people, which were right behind us! The walker took up the width of the entire sidewalk but that was OK because he was still pushing me, so we were going very fast. When we got to the end Brady slowed down to prevent me from tumbling backwards. But what he didn’t realize there was a bump from the transition plate to transfer from the moving sidewalk to the solid floor. The wheels came to an abrupt halt, which surprised us both.

Realizing that I’m stuck, I attempted to stand up forgetting I was on a moving sidewalk (because I couldn’t feel the motion) resulting in my feet getting pulled under the walker, backwards. In the attempt to save myself while Brady leaned over to assess the situation, completely oblivious to the people behind us, I grabbed the moving handrail…dananana… which caused me to start twisting as I was getting pulled under my walker, I attempted to call for help, which came out as a moan. Brady realizing that I was in distress looked behind him, saw the people! They had caught up with us, and started walking backwards but were still RIGHT THERE, and more were coming!

With more people approaching, Brady started to become uneasy. In the back of the crowd, he could see a man pushing an elderly man in a wheel chair approaching fast. I was still getting sucked under and twisted and calling for help. The man pushing the wheel chair then yelled MOOVE not realizing my condition, causing Brady to panic. I don’t know how he did it, Brady doesn’t remember either, somehow he swooped around and lifted me and my walker off the end just in time for the crowd and the man with the wheel chair to blow by like a bursting damn!

Now feeling human, being safe on solid ground, we couldn’t help but laugh. As we continued to laugh the crowd was reassured of our well being. Brady remembers the ‘wheelchair pusher’ scowling as he passed. It was just one of those times when it’s so intense, if everyone’s ok, it’s hilarious. And to this day, it still remains the funniest, most intense MS experience of my life! Brady and I laughed to the point of tears as we wrote this story.

You’d have to be there to get the full affect …dananana…

Linda, fabulous, as always. Thank you for the laughter. I can just see Brady as the somewhat confused HERO of the story. What a great kiddo you have. You are a great parent and all of your kids are proof of it.

Linda they are two great stories. I so love the cold sore story. That is funny but also the truth of how we often think we are the only one with “x” problem. There are lessons in that one.
The MS one, well I read in horror and then also laughed. You are becoming such a story teller. I can see you writing novels.
You are right laughter is the best. I am blessed with a sense of humor and can usually laugh at myself too.
Great stories and thanks for sharing them.

      “we’re-not-the-only-one”!

As for the novel writer… not even close! My kids had to help me write these stories!! But I am good at laughing!!!

My 13 year old daughter comes screaming into the kitchen holding her finger. I leap from my seat expecting to see blood dripping from her hand. I try to get her to stop screaming but she is out of control.

As I move closer to her, there is no apparent blood so I’m sure we will be heading to the emergency room for a broken finger x-ray.

All the while I’m try to get her to stop screaming and tell me what happened.

She finally blurts out, “I got a paper cut”. Everybody but her burst out laughing.

While reading your story I felt so anxious for you, but like you say, when you know everyone is alright, then you can’t help but laugh!! Of course now when asked to tell a funny story I can’t think of a single one, but, if I remember one soon, I’ll come back and share!

I like to make people laugh, that in itself is a funny story! :)

    Hi Linda,
Thanks for sharing your funny stories.
I, like Belinda, was expecting you to say that the honey in the Venice beach ended up becoming your husband :)
As for your experience at the airport, I was relieved that you weren’t hurt and were able to laugh about it.

You’re absolutely right, laughter is extremely good for us, and it’s great to be able to laugh at ourselves.

Ok, the first funny story that comes to mind is about a phone call I received one day. I was in a relationship at the time, and when I heard the unusually deep gruff voice on the other end of the phone, I automatically assumed it was my partner putting on a weird voice to confuse me and get a laugh.

So I responded with a ‘put on’ deep gruff voice which was really only a series of sounds, imitating how it sounded to me.
There was a moment of silence, as I waited, for what I thought was my partner, at the other end to start laughing. Instead, the same really deep gruff voice continued on with an addition to his initial conversation.

It was then that I realised with horror that it was Trevor, my neighbor from a few properties down, ringing to tell me something. This guy is as big as a bear and happens to be a timber cutter, and so is as strong as an ox.

I was soooooooo embarrassed I was wishing the floor would open up and swallow me. I felt sure he’d have thought that I was making fun of him.

I quickly tried to regain some composure and align myself with the legitimate conversation he was trying to have.

After getting off the phone I couldn’t get it out of my mind, and the thought of it would send me into fits of laughter and can still to this day.

I ran into Trevor some time down the track, I apologised to him and explained what had happened. He was fine and saw the funny side to it.

Thanks for inspiring me to recall this funny memory Linda :)

What an incredible story Linda. The drama was so real and although it sounded like it took ages to unfold I’m sure it actually all transpired quite quickly.

You’re so right though, laughter is the best medicine and it can change what could have been quite emotional into something that can be shared with others in a humorous way.

Are they laughing that hard seeing my face, As i laugh at there faces…hahaha..that was really funny. Best laugher to get.

Not a funny story, but it popped to mind when i read your article. So i was walking down the street with this friend of mine that has a little anxiety disorder, and this time he was tying to hide from the sun (don’t ask) and at one point in time he felt sick. I obviously made a joke and told him to not fall in the middle of the street because he’s too heavy and i can’t carry him all the way to the hospital. My friend got upset and told me this is no time to joke. But what else could i have done in those moments?! Laughter usually gets your spirit up.
