I Am Happy

My Journey with MS

One day, I was at the tail end of an MS exacerbation and I wasn’t able to do everything for my children that I used to do. I had always planned and prepared wonderful activities for my kids. Of course, they did their work around the house, they earned their money, the older kids paid for their own car-insurance. They were becoming responsible, contributing members of society, but I had been able to celebrate life with them! We were so happy!

I was in the kitchen, slowly cooking dinner, trying to hide the tears of mourning in my eyes, when my daughter noticed and asked, “What’s wrong, Mom?” I told her I was feeling sad because I couldn’t do everything that I used to be able to do.

“My greatest sadness,” I told her, “is that I won’t be able to make you happy.”
“But Mom,” Jaimi said, “I am happy.”

It was an “AH-HA Moment!” It came to me that I’m not responsible for my children’s happiness, anyone’s happiness for that matter! We all create our own reality!

Another great lesson that I learned through this MS experience. We truly are the creators of our own universe, no matter what our external circumstances are, we can be truly happy!

PS. This is Jaimi in 2001 and then again graduating high school in 2010.

    Hi Linda:

I love this post. Sometimes we project our own feelings of unhappiness onto others and don’t realize it’s not in their mind – it’s in ours. Thanks for that.

      Hey Leslie!
You are so right! I thinks we do that Alot!! We assume to know what other people are thinking and feeling, filtering it all through our own experiences! It’s all about communication!

Thank you for writing this inspiring post. I was speechless soon after reading it. I found I definitely agree with you. It leads me to think that happiness does not always related to ‘big matters’. Sometimes it occurs from simple things even just a piece of smile. God bless you.

I agree with you. As a mother my greatest happiness is to be happy my children. we would feel disappointed if we can not our children happy. But in my opinion, the love we give them is something that is most meaningful to our children.

It’s like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pictures to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog. A fantastic read. I will certainly be back.
