Blogging Tips

We are in the Information Era!  Sometimes it feels like we’re living in a science fiction world.  I’ve been throwing around the term Cyberspace since I started online marketing.

Cyberspace is a popular newbie term and some feel is overused. I don’t know why, I like it!!

I learned today that unlike most computer terms, “cyberspace” does not have a standard, objective definition. Instead, it is used to describe the virtual world of computers.

An object in cyberspace refers to a block of data floating around a computer system or network. With the advent of the Internet, cyberspace now extends to the global network of computers. So, after sending an e-mail to your friend, you could say you sent the message to her through cyberspace.

The word “cyberspace” is credited to William Gibson, who used it in his book, Neuromancer, written in 1984. Gibson defines cyberspace as “a consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts… A graphical representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the non-space of the mind, clusters and constellations of data” (New York: Berkley Publishing Group, 1989), pp. 128.

Click here: Neuromancer to purchase the book so you can take a break from your time in cyberspace, to read your own copy about cyberspace!

Do you like to read novels?  What is your favorite book?  My favorite books are the Mitford Series by Jan Karon.  Have any of you read it? With 5 books in the series, they are delightful!

    Hi Linda

    I’m still fascinated by how a facsimile machine works, let alone the whole cyberspace thing! :)

    I like the word “cyberspace” too, Linda.

    Do I like to read, no … I LOVE to read! In fact, today I gave my credit card another workout and bought another 10 books! (yes, for real :) ).

    I’ve enjoyed reading since I was young, and used to read lots of novels, however, these days, I much prefer non-fiction books in the categories of:

    * self-development/personal development;
    * business; and
    * spiritual.

    I also have lots of joke books – I love a good laugh! – so from time to time, I’ll get out a joke book and read through that (and “annoy” my family with a joke or two … or more! hehe).

    I honestly couldn’t narrow my favourite book down to only one, in fact, to narrow it down to 20 would be nearly impossible!

    There is, however, one book that I highly recommend to anyone because it’s applicable to every area of every life and that is:

    “The Slight Edge”, by Jeff Olsen.

    If you haven’t read it, Linda, (or anyone else reading my comment), I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It’s one of the many books that I’ve read numerous times.

    Linda, I’ve just noticed that CommentLuv isn’t working properly, so here is the url for one of my posts. Given that it’s the school holidays here at the moment, I’ve chosen this one:

    Hey Linda

    I am a big sci-fi fan.

    My favourite novel is a toss up between Federik Pohl’s Gateway and Asimov’s Foundation’s Edge.

    Oh Linda,

    You have hit on a topic that is near and dear to my heart! Like Kylie, I couldn’t possibly list one favorite book. Some favorite novelists are: John Grisham, James Patterson, Taylor Caldwell, Ayn Rand, Richard North Patterson, Nicolas Sparks, the list is endless.

    Words are a lot of fun to play with, too. Cyberspace is a relatively new word, coined in 1984.

    Okay, Kylie. I’m ordering “The Slight Edge” right now. If you recommend it, I’m sure it’s a 10!

    It only shows that information or the computer has its own wide world. I also like the word cyberspace, it makes me think of a very very wide and complicated world where our wide imagination existed.
