Backlinks: What they are and how to get them

Blogging Tips

Backlinks are incoming links to a website or blog. Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.

Backlinks are significant in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or blog.

In order for a website to be listed on the top of search engines like Google without the webmaster having to pay big money for advertising, the website has to have a large number of backlinks. If the website that is getting backlinks gets many High Quality and High Page Rank backlinks, the better the chance it has of being in a high position on the Search Engines.

How does a webmaster go about getting high quality backlinks to his or her website? There are many ways this can be done. Some people advocate writing and submitting articles. One popular place is GoArticles.com. Others post on forums or make comments on blogs.

A perfect example happened yesterday!  After chatting with Asiz we decided to post comments on each other’s blogs. When I read his post, I was pleasantly surprised to see his backlink for me!

Another way to get backlinks is to submit your website to various Internet directories. One directory that has an excellent reputation is called DMOZ, or the “Open Directory” . The websites it contains have all been placed there by human editors; there is no “automation” to this directory.

Social Bookmarking is a very popular way that many people build backlinks for their website or blog. With the advent of what is known as Web 2.0, gaining backlinks is easier now than ever. There is now an “interactive” quality to our sites. Readers are invited to post comments on the stories or articles on the website or blog. When a comment is written, many times the blog owner responds to these comments; thus making this section of the website or blog a conversation.

So take advantage, please leave your comments below about Backlinks. Tell me how you’ve succeeded in getting more backlinks to your site.

I appreciate the link to the article writing site as this is something on my list to start doing. I appreciate you sharing this info Linda :-)

Good explanation, I wasn’t familiar with this term until I read your post. I consider myself a newbie who likes being transparent or naked. I really thought that was a clever title. Feel free to refer to me as Ziz, make it easier to spell my name.

    Good tips!
